I’ve just been reading an interesting discussion on Conservative Home about the English Question. Tory MP Harriett Baldwin is introducing a Private Members Bill called the Legislation (Territorial Extent) Bill which seeks to address some of the injustices suffered by the English as a result of devolution to the other home nations.

It’s worth a read of what she says, but it’s also worth reading the comments from Tories as they seem heavily in favour of an English parliament. If only the Tory leadership thought the same…………..

John Sullivan Dies

John Sullivan wrote some of the best comedies to appear on TV and it is very sad writing about the death of the man who gave us Delboy and Citizen Smith. John was a comedy genius and his writing will live on for many years.

David Jason, who played Delboy, had this to say:

“We have lost our country’s greatest comedy writer but he leaves us a great legacy, the gift of laughter. My thoughts at this time are with his lovely family.”

I remember seeing a documentary about John one night and he told the story of the Only Fools and Horses theme tune. He wrote it and also sang it. He had to have a good drink first, because he was so nervous. I would think there’s not a person in the country who doesn’t know the theme tune to Only Fools and Horses.

Not only is it St. George’s Day today but it is also the birthday and deathday of England’s greatest writer William Shakespeare. Here’s what the BBC have to say about the Bard:

Shakespeare’s reputation as dramatist and poet actor is unique and he is considered by many to be the greatest playwright of all time, although many of the facts of his life remain mysterious.

Many of us would have studied his work at school or college, and will be familiar with lines from works such as Henry V and Richard III. Being an historian, whenever I read any of his plays, I’d imagine myself being taken back to the times he wrote about. It seemed easy to do this because his work made you feel part of the surroundings.

So today on this great day in English history, drink a toast to England’s greatest playwright.
