I saw a piece on BBC this morning which mentioned the British National Anthem, which of course is God Save The Queen. I thought it mildly amusing because according to various public bodies, the British state comprises ‘Nations and Regions’.

The BBC itself refers to Nations and Regions, as does the London 2012 Olympic organisers. These kind of organisations have conferred nation status on Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but consider England as simply a collection of Regions.

So let’s turn things around. Let’s refer to God Save The Queen as not the ‘National Anthem’, but the ‘Nations and Regions Anthem’. Whenever an advertiser calls a product ‘The Nation’s Favourite’, let’s tell them it’s the ‘Nations and Regions Favourite’.

If British government organisations wish to turn Britain into ‘Nations and Regions’, we should do the same to their anthem.
