Go Compare is running one of its irritating adverts with the opera singer again and this one has him being shot by a rocket launcher. At the end of the advert they show a sign with half of a union flag with the words underneath ‘Saving the Nation’.
Which nation are they talking about? Is the advertising company not aware that Britain has never been a nation but a union of nations? Is it not also aware that the current trend is ‘nations and regions’?
Perhaps their advert should properly say ‘Saving the Nations and Regions’.
When Scotland hopefully declares independence we can dump the Union flag!
Apparently some bloke on the BBC said recently we would keep it even if Scotland declared independence. The reasoning is that the Queen would still be head of state of Scotland. Nonsense really.
We could take that reasoning even further, and say that the ‘Union’ flag should also include the maple leaf from the Canadian flag and the southern cross from the Australian flag, simply because the British monarch is also head of state of Canada and Oz. As you say, it’s nonsense, but it’s also a reminder of how the British state makes up everything as it goes along, whether it’s flags and other emblems, the constitution, or what they laughingly call ‘democracy’.
